Cobra SS Forged irons
Shaft:Trur Temper Dynamic Gold S-300 (stiff)
Grip:Golf Pride Tour Velvet

Looks:While Cobra built it’s reputation in recent years on manufacturing clubs aimed at the Lady and Senior golfer in particular, they did make some very nice “players” clubs in the past. The Greg Norman Tour Forged shallow cavity and Greg Norman Tour Grind blade were superb quality iron sets (some good bargains can still be had on exchange sites on the internet). The SS Forged are handsome clubs to the eye.The high chrome finish gleams and oozes quality. The heads show minimal offset and while midsize are not tending towards the oversize of game improvement sets and are definitely aimed at the better player. There is fine weight in the heads and this will benefit the player who likes to know where the club is at ant time during the swing (ie.99% of all golfers!).From above the thin topline gives the impression of a blade (Mizuno MP-33,TaylorMade RAC,etc) and this will limit further it’s appeal the mid and high handicappers. The relatively large cavity has an arch where weight is concentrated low in the clubhead. The Dynamic Gold shaft is industry standard,as is the Tour Velvet grip and the overall club makeup, with a quality ferrule,is very impressive.

Performance:Very good! The long irons are pretty frightening to look at,but are surprisingly easy to use, picking the ball off the turf with ease.Trajectory is mid-low and best strikes are rewarded with a fantastic “aeroplane” trajectory that lands hot and running and for really good overall distance.Mishits are handled well by the cavity and there is no major loss of distance.Mid irons are more of the same, with consistent distance and predictable mid trajectory and good spin on approach shots.Short irons may be a little too chunky for the purist, but there is no denying their effectiveness. All the scoring shots are easily executed (bunker shots, little greenside chips, punch shots and cut –up/lob shots) and spin rates are high, giving great control. The complete set gives good results from the rough, despite a relatively narrow sole and shaping shots either way is a breeze (forged head,no offset and midsize head).

Value:£675 (steel stiff flex only) makes these clubs good value versus forged models from it’s main competitors (Titleist,TaylorMade,Mizuno).Forged clubs mark up easily and this, allied to Cobra’s lack of “street cred” as a players brand may lead to average resale value.

Overall:Excellent clubs for the high single digit player and excellent value for money.Lower handicappers will be swayed by superior reputation of rival brands, but might well be advised to demo these and save up to £200 into the bargain, but high handicappers will find more forgiving SS-I oversize an equally cheap better alternative.
